17 Red Flags Your Efforts Are Unappreciated at Work

Do you suspect that you’re being taken for granted at work? Then in this article, you’ll find 17 signs that will help you determine whether this is happening to you or not.

Your Deadlines Are Unrealistic

Are you always battling to meet unrealistic deadlines at work? Is your boss very angry with you when you can’t meet them? Then chances are you’re being taken advantage of. The more you stress yourself out and try to meet these deadlines, the harder they’ll expect you to work next time.

You’re Given Overtime

Working overtime should be optional. If you’re given overtime hours to work by your boss and you’re expected to complete them without being asked about it first, your boss is showing you that they’re taking advantage of you. They think you don’t have a life outside the office.

You’re Not Paid Enough for Overtime

How much are you getting paid to work overtime? According to USA.gov, “[Your] overtime rate must be at least 1.5 times the amount of your hourly pay rate. Your employer must pay you at the overtime rate for the extra hours you worked.” If you’re getting less than that, you’re being taken advantage of.

People Gossip About You

Gossip is always hurtful. It speaks badly about the person who initiated it, those who spread it, and those who believe it. Gossip can destroy your reputation. If the members of your team are talking about you and saying things that aren’t true, they don’t appreciate you.

Your Shifts Are Canceled Late

Does your boss cancel your shifts late? Then they think that you can adapt to their poor organization and aren’t interested in how a canceled shift might affect you financially. They’re convinced that you live to work so you’ll be willing to put up with anything from them.

Your Schedule Is Always Late

Do you work on a schedule? Then you no doubt appreciate knowing as well in advance as possible which dates you’ll be working and at what times. But if your schedule is always late, your boss is showing a lack of respect for your free time.

You Can’t Make Mistakes

If you’re reprimanded when you make a small mistake at work, your colleagues are showing you that they’re intolerant and expect perfection from you. If you’re expected to work without making any mistakes, then your boss should have hired a robot to do the job, not a human.

Your Pay Is Late

Receiving a payment late from your employer is the same as receiving no payment at all, says the Nakase Law Firm. Late payment is extremely unacceptable and an employer who repeatedly pays late, even just by a day, shows a lack of consideration for their employees.

You Lack Equipment

Were you given the correct equipment to start work? If you’re missing part of a personal protection kit or safety protection gear, your workplace is showing that they don’t care about you as an individual. They should provide everything you need to stay safe while on the job.

They Call You All the Time

It’s a good idea to “answer emails during work hours [and] set a specific time to finish working,” says Indeed. When your boss calls you after hours and expects you to pick up, they show you that they don’t value your free time.

You’re Being Bullied

Are you being bullied at work? Bullying is not something that only goes on at school; it’s a real situation that many adults are facing in the workplace. If your boss knows about the bullying and does nothing about it, they’re showing that they’re taking you for granted.

You’re Never Cut Any Slack

You work hard, always come in on time, and try to be nice to everyone. Even still, when you need a little time off for a dentist appointment or have a family emergency, your boss is less than willing to cut you any slack. When your boss behaves like this, they show you how little they value you.

You Don’t Get Sick Pay

“Currently, there are no federal legal requirements for paid sick leave,” says the U.S. Department of Labor. In some states in the U.S., you are entitled to paid sick leave, and in others, you’re not. But a boss who gives sick pay to their employees shows that they appreciate them.

Your Workplace Is Too Cold

Does your workplace get extra cold in the winter? Working in a cold office will make you less productive. A company that makes their workers work in an indoor environment that is too cold shows that they don’t care about their employees or their health.

Your Shifts Are Crazy

Are your shifts all over the place? If you’re expected to work very long hours, go home for just a few hours of rest, and then return to work shortly afterward, you’re being taken advantage of. You should check the terms of your contract with your employer and seek legal advice.

You Don’t Have a Contract

No one should be called for a job that they don’t have a contract for. When this happens, the company shows that they don’t want to commit to their worker or take the job seriously. Many people start jobs without legal contracts out of desperation and employers know this.

You Must Train Others

Are you expected to train others at work while still getting all of your regular work done? This is not fair, as training others takes a lot of time out of your already busy schedule. If your boss expects you to do this without lightening your workload, they’re showing a lack of appreciation for your work.
